How the Scrap Value Estimate Is Calculated

Base metal value starts from the vehicle’s recoverable steel weight. Steel and iron make up about 65% of the average vehicle’s weight, per WorldAutoSteel’s recycling data, compiled from American Iron and Steel Institute and Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries figures. This is a widely cited industry share, not a fixed law of vehicle construction, since actual steel content varies by make, model, and drivetrain.

Ton size is 2,000 lb for the US short ton or 1,000 kg for the metric tonne, matching whichever weight unit is selected. The most common mistake feeding this step is entering gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) instead of curb weight: GVWR includes maximum cargo and passenger capacity and can overstate the vehicle’s actual weight, and therefore the base metal value, by several hundred pounds on trucks and vans.

On top of base metal value, the calculator layers an age multiplier (2015-or-newer ×1.5, 2010–2014 ×1.2, 2000–2009 ×1.0, pre-2000 ×0.8) and a body-type multiplier (Heavy Truck ×1.6, Pickup ×1.4, SUV/Crossover ×1.3, Van/Minivan ×1.2, Sedan/Coupe ×1.0) onto the catalytic converter, engine, and transmission values below.

These multipliers are this calculator’s own weighting scheme rather than a published industry standard — no publicly available cross-vehicle valuation table exists for scrap component pricing, so treat them as directional estimates, not authoritative figures.

Component and core values are added next. An intact original catalytic converter is valued at $180, multiplied by body type and by a precious-metal tier (Standard ×1.0, Premium for hybrid/luxury/diesel ×2.2, Economy for older or sub-compact vehicles ×0.6).

A replaced aftermarket converter drops to a flat $40 regardless of type or tier, since replacement units typically carry far less palladium and rhodium. A missing or cut-off converter adds $0. Alloy wheels add $70, also scaled by body type; a working 12-volt battery adds $25; intact wiring and radiator copper adds $50.

A hybrid or EV traction battery pack adds a base value of $120 (hybrid) or $280 (EV), scaled again by pack size — Compact ×1.0, Standard ×1.5, Large ×2.2. That means even a compact EV pack ($280) is worth more than a large hybrid pack ($120 × 2.2 = $264), and a large EV pack ($616) can exceed the entire base metal value of a small sedan.

Parts value adds the engine ($120, scaled by body type and age) and transmission ($90, scaled the same way) if each is still installed, plus a $120 running bonus (scaled by age) if the vehicle is marked “Runs and Drives” rather than non-running. Gross value is the sum of base metal, component, and parts values; the net cash offer subtracts towing or pickup cost from that total.

Model year accepts 1900 through one year ahead of the current calendar year; entries outside that range, along with a zero, blank, or negative curb weight or scrap price, halt the calculation rather than returning a misleading result.

Towing cost accepts $0 for free pickup but rejects negative values. If entered towing cost exceeds the calculated gross value — realistic for a very light, old, or fully stripped vehicle — the net offer is floored at $0 instead of displaying as negative.

Three input mistakes distort this estimate most often. Entering GVWR instead of curb weight inflates the base metal value. Leaving Vehicle Type on the Sedan/Coupe default for an SUV, pickup, van, or heavy truck understates nearly every multiplied line, since the body-type multiplier feeds the catalytic converter, wheels, engine, and transmission values. And using a stale or remembered scrap price instead of a current local quote skews base metal value directly, since the calculator applies whatever price is entered with no averaging or cap.
